Peter’s near-fanatical devotion to his work has served him well as the movie begins: His many satisfied clients leave him voice mail messages of effusive praise for changing their lives; he’s been profiled in The New Yorker. But he becomes unsettled when his diagnosis and proposed solution for Ellen (Rashida Jones), a nonprofit worker, fails to solve her chronic sleep issues. As he tries to get to the root of her problems (including the lingering pain from the demise of a long-term relationship), they develop something like a friendship, or an amiable case of opposites-must-interact. The symbolic and the practical aside, there’s also the real question of our constitutional order. Either the president is above the law or he isn’t. Voters can’t determine this — elections aren’t actually the venue for adjudicating that kind of conflict. This is a job for our elected representatives in Congress. And if House Democrats believe Trump has violated the Constitution, they have an obligation to act on that belief, even if conviction in the Senate is impossible under current political circumstances. Elijah Cummings, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, made this point on Sunday in an interview on “Face the Nation.” “Even if we did not win, possibly, if there were not impeachment, I think history would smile upon us for standing up for the Constitution,” he said.
Again, should Netanyahu remain prime minister — which is possible only if he puts together a ruling coalition made up of far-right parties that want to absorb the West Bank and its 2.5 million Palestinians into Israel — Israel will be on its way to becoming either a binational state of Arabs and Jews or a state that systematically deprives a large and growing segment of its population of the democratic right to vote. Neither will be a Jewish democracy, the dream of Israel’s founders and still the defining, but endangered, political characteristic of the state. Though Turkey’s hazelnuts bring in about .8 billion in a good year, the farms struggle for profitability. The most generous price-support programs have been phased out. The rugged terrain makes it nearly impossible to mechanize the harvest. And when farmers die, their land is often subdivided among their children, adding more patches to a quilt that looks crazy already. The size of the average farm is now just four acres.Delivered in 2-3 bussiness days
A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II, by Sonia Purnell. (Viking, .) You’ve probably never heard of Virginia Hall, the coolheaded, one-legged operative who infiltrated Vichy France, but her story deserves to be celebrated. Purnell’s excellent biography should help make that happen. “If Virginia Hall herself remains something of an enigma — a testament, perhaps, to the skills that allowed her to live in the shadows for so long — the extraordinary facts of her life are brought onto the page here with a well-judged balance of empathy and fine detail,” Mick Herron writes in his review. “This book is as riveting as any thriller, and as hard to put down.” (Here’s the sign-up, if you don’t already get California Today by email.)
Around the world, a shift in diplomatic strategy has already begun. Making the accord work without the United States will require other major polluters like China and India to step up. China, now the largest emitter of planet-warming pollutants, has made significant promises but Beijing’s ability to deliver is still in question. It was decidedly different in the lead-up to Tuesday’s election. Ms. Agins said that she hardly ever saw Ms. Lightfoot heckled. Mostly she saw the candidate’s support coalesce. It was especially striking, she said, at packed Irish pubs in the Beverly neighborhood on the Far South Side.Delivered in 2-3 bussiness days
Log InWASHINGTON — The Pentagon has redirected enough money to build 256 miles of barriers along the southwestern border, including 63 miles within six months, the acting defense secretary told lawmakers on Wednesday. Leaders of her own party drafted a resolution rebuking her comments. Republicans have threatened to censure her. Things escalated when President Trump accused her of playing down the events of Sept. 11 after comments she made about the aftermath of the attacks.
